*sighs*

I had to throw out most of the contents of my freezer - again.

Rowan's developing something of an independent streak, which I am mostly indulging. One of these is that he often gets his own breakfast on the weekends. At the moment, he's preferring toast over cornflakes, and I was storing our latest loaf in the freezer.

Yeah, you know where this is going, right?

I didn't realise the freezer door was slightly ajar until about four hours later, when I noticed him push it all-the-way closed while looking for a non-existent snack in the fridge. On inspection, everything except the ice-cream and ice lollies looked well on their way to defrosting. *sighs*

I cooked up the mince and peas immediately, making a weird 'minced beef and peas in bolognase sauce' concoction (since I certainly can't call it bolognase) and put that back in the freezer. Same with the sausages. The mini-pizzas and hash browns got eaten for lunch, and the fish fingers and left over peas went in the fridge - Rowan has since eaten them for his tea. Unhealthy, I know, but they needed to be eaten asap.

We then hitched a ride to collect Dad from work at ASDA, so we could get a little shopping. I was panicking a little as, to the best of my knowledge, I had practically no money - but thankfully this proved not to be the case and all is, for the moment, alright. As long as I'm careful.

It did have an upside, though; I usually buy my freezer stuff from Iceland, who specialise in frozen food and are actually pretty reasonable. The last couple of times we had this happen, I've managed to fully restock the freezer for about thirty quid; I spent about twenty today - two thirds of that on freezer food - and haven't got very much to show for it. So, the next time I fully stock the freezer - which I'd planned to do in September, having defrosted the thing first - I shall be doing it there. ASDA's great for everything else but, sadly, not frozen food. At least, not the way I buy it.

I wasn't too hard on Rowan though - I had a freak out on him when I discovered what had happened, and his Nan had words with him in the car, but I figured that was enough. He did understand what he'd done wrong, and it certainly wasn't on purpose.

*sigh* I'm just so relieved that I actually did have some money available, or we would really be up shit-creek right about now. I rely very heavily on the stuff in my freezer.

Yeah, our freezer just likes to shut itself off for no reason - we lose food all the time and it's such a pain. We're limited in what we can buy because we can't trust our freezer.

Ugh, that sounds like a nightmare. :-(

Mike's done that with our freezer, too, but so far we've managed to catch it before anything got defrosted.

He likes to try to cook for himself, too, which I'd like to encourage - the only problem is that he tends to nearly burn the house down with the toaster oven. (He also likes to sneak the ham I've bought for his lunch up to his room and eat it, and then we have to go out and buy more. I'll be glad when it's September and he can buy school lunches again.)

*nods* Breakfast's the only thing I trust him to do for himself, really. He can cope with toast and - while he has been known to make a mess - cereal's hardly rocket science either. He's certainly not ready to use the oven - which is gas - or the microwave, really.

I can't tell you how often I've discovered that he's sneaked into the kitchen in the middle of the night and stolen something; one time I found a jar of chocolate spread under his bed - from its fuzziness it had apparently been there some time *grimaces*

Next time we are down do you want me to see if Will can can tilt the fridge freezer back so that the door will swing shut? Will had to adjust the feet on his mothers fridge freezer when the door was left open.

I'm lucky with mine kit has an alarm on it, so if the temprature gets about a certain point the it beeps at you, which is rather confusing if you have the breadmaker on at the time and the beep is the same. Took me a moment to work out where the beep was comming from.

Hmm, possibly. Mostly I think he just needs to be more careful.

I wish my freezer did that...but then, it's an old thing, and probably wasn't new when my sister had it.

I managed to leave the freezer door slightly ajar myself some time ago, but all that seemed to happen was that it built up extra frost - all the food was still okay. At least, I didn't throw anything away, and we're still here ...

I don't keep much frozen food anyway, though, not having a small child to feed.

That's lucky! You must have a pretty good freezer.

Heh - I often wish they did fridge-freezers where the fridge was tiny and the freezer massive, instead of the other way round. I tend to be pretty bad at using up food supplies that only have a short life on them, so I get the frozen versions as much as I can.
