I swear, the DNN radio news network is appalling! *shakes head in bemusement* I know Welsh is tricky for non-speakers - especially those who don't live in the country - but some of the mistakes they make are unbelievable!

Tonight's example: There was just a news item about Ian McKellan doing a remake of The Prisoner, and the newsreader happily declared that the original series was filmed in Port Marie-On!

It's Port-My-Ree-On you numpties! Do some bloody research before you record these things, so you don't make yourselves look like complete pillocks!

*exhales*

Ddu dda...

Now you have me wondering if I've been pronouncing it wrong all these years. I've been there twice (BIG Prisoner fan), but I am American, so maybe I can be forgiven (please?). I will have to meet you someday, and you can teach me the correct way to pronounce it.

On a related note: Is it still open to stay there, do you know? Hubby and I were talking just yesterday how we needed to visit and actually spend a night or two there if we could. He's never been, and I've only ever visited, and that was over 20 years ago, omg.

Hee - I think you can be forgiven. Out of interest, just how have you been pronouncing Portmeirion? I'd certainly be happy to teach you! ;-)

Hmmm..I honestly couldn't say - I've never actually been there myself. I think you can, but if not, there's caravan sites, hotels and bed & breakfasts within very short driving distance anyway. Last time I came close to going there, we were staying at a caravan park near Rhyl, on the north-eastern side of Wales, as opposed to the north-west where Portmeirion is. Had my parents had enough faith in the car on those narrow country roads, it would have taken us about an hour or so to drive there.

I am not sure if I can textually render my pronunciation. I am trying to figure out how, and I just can't. Maybe a cross between what I think you are saying it is and what the announcer said. Not sure. Kinda like Mary-on, but you have to realize that that is three syllables, not two, and a soft "a".

Both times that I went there, we stayed at B&B's. Not sure how we got to the resort from there. But it is a dream of mine, to stay there. Such a cool place.
