So today Rowan's Badger group started meeting again after the summer break - but when I picked him up from school today he informed me he doesn't want to go back to Badgers anymore....
See, I'm in something of a sticky position as I've always maintained I would never force him to continue with an extra-curricular activity if he was no longer enjoying it. But the thing is that, before they finished for the summer, he'd only attended a handful of meetings. So I am not convinced that he's come to this decision fully informed, and am therefore reluctant to let him stop.
He says its not as much fun as he thought it was going to be, but I think part of that is the time it's taking them to earn their current badge. I think they still have a couple more weeks to go before they've completed it, but kids are impatient. *sighs*
There's also a part of me that would be somewhat embarrassed if he quit now, as my Uncle runs the Badger/Cadet group out in the Vale of Glamorgan and Eve - the somewhat standoffish woman who leads our local Cadet group but oversees the Badgers at the same time - is aware of this. I know my Uncle would be gutted if Rowan gave up, as he's been with the St John Ambulance for as long as I can remember - likely even before I was born.
Anyway, I was rather harsh with him and insisted that he continue to go, at least until half-term. If he's still wanting to quit by then, I'll just have to accept it. Would be such a shame though.
We argued on the way home from school about it, and he was quite upset and frustrated, but by the time we needed to leave he seemed to have accepted it and I had no trouble from him. He was even joking around with me on the walk there - which is one thing I definitely would not miss, as I hate walking back and forth to the school twice in the space of an hour and a half! I can only imagine how much more I will hate it once the winter weather sets in...
