Huh, whaddya know...
May. 27th, 2008 08:39 pmI was glancing through my cable provider's video library last week, and noticed that they're currently carrying Season 1 of The West Wing. I've tried to watch this show before, but usually so far into the series that I have no clue who anyone is or what's going on.
Plus, y'know, being British I have no idea of US politics other than what I hear on The Daily Show. Hell, I have no clue about UK politics, other than it's all bullshit.
So I thought, why not? Let's see what's what. As you guys know, I adore Sports Night, and kinda enjoyed what little I've seen of Studio 60 (and last I checked, that was on the video library too, so I should get on that as well...) so maybe Sorkin could win me over with this one too.
I tried to follow Commander In Chief, back when I could get ABC1, and that started off fine. My issue with that show was the constant harping on about how this was the 'First Woman President!', and the way there were always these two plots going on; some threat to the President's reputation - because OMG! A woman in the Oval Office! - and some terrorist action or other that may or may not need a military response - and OMG! Could a woman make those kinds of decisions?
If this had been a movie, I would have loved it. And I have no gender-related issues to the idea of Hillary Clinton being elected president this autumn. But to watch the same thing, week after week after week? No thanks.
But, here am I watching episode four of The West Wing, and it's actually pretty good. Here's hoping I enjoy the rest of it.
