We didn't have many little family traditions as I was growing up - at least, not many that obviously spring to mind - but one very important one was having porridge for breakfast in the winter.

Doesn't sound like much, I know, but my Dad made it into something of an event for me and him. Mam was never around for breakfast on a weekday morning, by the time I was in high school, so it was just him and me eating our porridge and listening to the radio (another tradition I've kept going myself). I always eagerly anticipated the weather turning cold enough that Dad would consider making it.

Since Dad started working in the supermarket, the opportunities for porridge got fewer and fewer since he has to start work at seven in the morning. But any time he was around, out came the Scotts Porage Oats and the Golden Syrup (which has to completely cover the top of the porridge before you even think of licking the spoon *nodnod*). We had these absolutely massive bowls, kept specially for the porridge or Mam's stew; it may have looked like we were being greedy pigs, but in actual fact it was a practical thing, as the large bowls allowed us to avoid spilling the milk that gets poured over the porridge to cool it down.

As you can imagine, since moving out of my parents place for - hopefully - the final time, two and a half years ago, my opportunities to enjoy my Dad's porridge have been pretty much nil. But this year I've missed it so much that I bought a box of Scotts this weekend (the brand is important, as none of the ones Dad's tried have compared) and I made myself a bowl this morning. *happy sigh* It's nice to have a warm, fairly full belly!

It really is! And Rowan's taken to it well too - I told him he had to wake me up fairly early this morning, so we'd have the time to eat it and get everything else done, and he actually did it! He was very insistent! *laughs* He couldn't eat the whole bowl, but he said it was great and is happy to have the same again tomorrow! *is pleased*
