I would like to say "I win at parenting!" but I think we probably drew today.
I was this close to being late for work this morning - probably close enough to the deadline that they noted my file as being late anyway - because he was messing around so much this morning that I missed the bus from the nursery to the office.
When I collected him, he'd done something he wasn't supposed to and was being told off by the deputy nursery-leader so he's been on punishment all evening - which means no TV. Having been exposed to the wonderful aromas of lasagne at lunchtime, I'd brought some home for our tea along with some garlic bread. Rowan decided he didn't like lasagne even though he's never had it, and has eaten bolognase in the past. It was this last fact that made me stand my ground and I made him stay at the table till he ate it, despite his screams and pleading, and hid his garlic bread in the microwave. In the end he ate about half of it, which is where my almost-win comes in. But, being my son, the fight wasn't really worth it. He fussed so much I put him to bed at six pm...*sigh*
He's hard work sometimes.
We had a fairly good weekend. It was too overcast to go down the beach again, so we headed into town to the Big Weekend. This is an annual event where fairground rides line the 'Civic Centre', which is an area just off the town centre, where City Hall, the Crown Court and the University surround a small park known as Cathays Park. The streets are unusually wide around that area, making plenty of room for rides and fairground attractions up and down the area. Mam, Rowan and I met up with Mel and her boyfriend Will and went on quite a few rides. They even took Rowan on a rollercoaster with carriages that spin around like wurlitzers! I have a photo of it, which I need to scan in - all three look like they're cacking themselves, but they did in fact thoroughly enjoy themselves.
Here be pictures!

As you can see, Rowan enjoyed a brief career as a jockey! *grins* Guess he'd better make the most of it while he's still small enough - that won't be the case for long!

Rowan's godparents, Mel and Will!

You can't see us very clearly, but that's me and Rowan on the chair-planes! I took Rowan on that thinking it would be just like the one at Folly Farm....whoooo boy was I wrong! I think I now know how it feels to travel by 'Jumpline Express' - it was just how I'd imagine swinging around Gotham on a decel cable....I had to work very hard at keeping the "Oooooh shiiiiiiiit!" out of my voice and act like I was enjoying myself for Rowan's sake! *laughs* I did enjoy it, but it went much faster than a wimp like me was prepared for.
After we'd gone right the way through, Mam headed off to do some errands and the rest of us went to the pub down the road from my office to relax and chat while resting our tired feet. Most pubs in Cardiff have 'Family Areas' now, plus I don't drink, so there was no problem with taking Rowan in with us. Will and Rowan have really bonded in recent months, so most of the time we were in the pub Will was wrestling with him and making him laugh. I'm waiting for Mel to send me the photos she took on their camera phones, but in the meantime, here's an unfortunately rather fuzzy set of pictures. My camera doesn't seem to like to take pictures indoors without the flash, but I didn't want to irritate any other patrons.

Sunday we dossed around the house for most of the day, before heading out to my brother's house for a barbeque/first birthday party for my neice Katie. She almost slept through it, but since most of the party guests were well over an hour late arriving, it wasn't a problem. I had a good long hold of her at one point, but mostly because I was prepared to stand in the dining room with her and let her try and get the balloons down off the ceiling! *laughs* She knows what she wants, does our Katie-bear.
There was an unpleasant moment when Rowan came over bawling his eyes out 'cause a six-year old obnoxious little gobshite called Jayden had kicked him in the face. An older kid called Rhys came out with him to let me know that, while he'd seen Jayden kick Rowan, he hadn't seen whatever had prompted it. Jayden was very vocal in his insistance that Rowan had kicked him first - which is out of character for Rowan, though he has been known to hit his classmates when in a bad mood, but since there was no way to prove otherwise I just had to cuddle my son and let it pass. Though personally, the way Jayden refused to go tell his mother what happened speaks volumes. But that could just be my own bias talking. Never-the-less, I was relieved to go home about an hour later.
Man...with the occasional exception, I can't stand other people's children. I am dreading when Rowan starts bringing friends home to play....
