gothams3rdrobin: (dan and casey - working)
I have fixed the problem with my firewall! *streamers and balloons*

The lovely [livejournal.com profile] unkaphaed mentioned in my last post that there appears to be some sort of software conflict between the latest XP security update and the ZoneAlarm firewall program - which is the one I use. I called my Dad to see if he had the same problem - he wasn't certain as his laptop is Vista, and my Mam's laptop doesn't have ZA installed, but we had a good natter about it and it occurred to us that I haven't had my desktop computer turned on for about a week, so it wouldn't have received the update posted on Tuesday.

So I turn the computer on while we're talking, and yeah, everything's working just fine. Then that little yellow shield turns up in my sys-tray...

We take a looksee at exactly what was being installed, making a note of the update id number so I could look into taking it off my laptop to see if that resolved the problem. Dad then goes off the phone to go fire up his old XP desktop (yes, we're a multi-computer family, and my mother has recently joined our ranks ;-p) while I complete the installation on my desktop and look and see what happens. Sure enough, no net access.

So I go into my laptop's 'add/remove programs' menu and remove the update. Once it's restarted, lo an behold! My internet's back! *smooches it* Of course, the yellow shield turns up again...

Dad phones back to say that the same thing's happened on his PC, and we discuss what our next move could be. I go back into the installation menu on the laptop to see if I can somehow not install that update, and yay! It lets me!

So, for now, everything appears to be cool and I'm in the process of doing exactly the same on the desktop. Hopefully that program won't keep trying to reinstall itself now.

Thank you Phaed! You gave me the clues I needed to fix this! *HUGS*

So if anyone else has the same problem in the next week or so? You just need to uninstall Security Update KB 951798, restart and then refuse the update when it tries to reinstall it. Job done! :-)
