Yay for the weekend
Jun. 11th, 2006 01:46 pmI would have liked to have been able to sleep in this weekend, but I think the pay-off was worth it.
Mam, Rowan and I headed out on the bus at just after nine yesterday morning on our way down to Barry Island. Mam thought it would be best to get to the beach early, considering the high temperatures we've dealt with over the last week. As it turns out, it was slightly overcast and there was a cool breeze - which actually made the day much more pleasant. I think we were out on the sand for about four hours, though by the time we left it was starting to get hot again. The walk up to the promenade over the dry sand was pure agony, it was so hot.
We took along the requisite buckets and spades as well as a few other beach toys, and Rowan ended up playing with the kids sat along side us for a while. He and I also took a walk all the way down to the shore for a paddle - it was low tide so it was quite a walk, but the first meter in was nice and walm. We had a great time jumping over the waves.
I was well amused while waiting for Rowan to get done on the inflatable slide. The vendor had a local radio station playing, and they appeared to be in the middle of a request show. Someone apparently called in to request The Starland Band's 'Afternoon Delight' and the DJ had to apologise profusely that - despite his claims that they searched their entire archive - they just did not have a copy.... Not sure if I believe him though.
I wonder if the listener was also a Sports Night fan....
We kept Rowan extremely well covered in suncream, and he spent some time wearing a t'shirt or his Welsh-flag poncho to compensate for the wind. With his colouring we have to be extremely careful not to let him catch the sun.
However, me? I was wearing a pair of cropped trousers and had my feet sticking out from under the parasol we hired . As a result I have sunburn on my lower legs, around my ankles....
After that we popped to my grandparents house for a little while before going home. Rowan and I headed straight back to our place rather than call in to see Dad, 'cause Rowan was very tired and had so far avoided a cranky outburst. Quit while you're ahead, you know?
We snuggled for the rest of the evening in front of the TV, watching Static Shock and Doctor Who. There was a scene in Doctor Who that made Rowan cry - not necessarily the one you might expect - but I managed to talk him into calming down. He's still learning the rules of dramatic television, so I often have to keep reminding him it's only pretend, but he doesn't normally react too much to what he sees.
I spent the rest of the night, and much of this morning, tidying up the house in preparation for my grandparents bringing me their old tv. Once Rowan was safely off with my in-laws, we brought it back to the flat and set it up. As I've already mentioned, I'm pretty chuffed that it can play my NTSC discs - we have about twelve DVDs between us that are from the US, so this is quite a relief.
I also now have a tv in my room again too, along with my old dvd player and vcr! *grins* This is very much of the yay.

Plus, a little home-movie, since my camera's capable of that.

I wish the uploaded version wasn't so pixelated though - I've tried remaking the file to something a little more stable, but no luck so far.
