Bank Holidays - Heaven and Hell combined
May. 29th, 2006 08:26 pmHeaven: an extra - paid - day off work. Three days when you have the opportunity to sleep late and then do whatever you want/need to do.
Hell: I usually end up spending the extra day with my parents, which means I often end up getting really mad at a bored, tired Rowan. When you go back to work it's really hard to get it through your head that it's tuesday, and there's usually an absolute mountain of work to get through. Half of which will be customers bitching 'cause you didn't respond to their emails on Bank Holiday Monday. 'Cause naturally you didn't have the day off like they did, oh no.
Today was especially bad because it's Dad's birthday. It started off alright, as he initially liked his present - the novelisation of DC's original 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' series. His opinion changed later on when he started reading it as he apparently has some concerns with the continuity of the story-telling. Personally, I enjoyed my sneak-peak at the first couple of chapters and I intend to get myself a copy next time I go see Kris.
I was a little uneasy about getting invited along to visit Dad's parents, as the last time I spoke to them was a month ago and I ended up having an arguement with them over the phone. But I decided to make sure I was never alone in a room with either of them and act like the fight never happened. It worked, thank goodness. Plus, totally out of the blue, they offered me their television as they're planning to buy a new one!
So now I gotta hope it's sufficiently higher-range than mine that it'll play NTSC, and that the fact the picture's slightly-out-of-focus is due to my grandparents' eyesight... I don't think I could cope if it's not, but I don't dare bring it up incase they take offense at my implying they need better glasses or whatever. Especially since Nan doesn't really bother to wear glasses in the first place.
Anyway, after we were done with the visit, we headed back to my parents place for tea. Ended up staying there ages 'cause Mam chose to cook a chicken. By the time we ate, Rowan was getting tired and fidgety and it was late enough that I needed to get him home pretty soon afterwards.
Dad had been getting slowly more miserable as the day wore on, as is very common with him, and when we eventually served his birthday cake Mam was about ready to strangle him. There are times I seriously hate being with my family, and this was most definitely one of them.
Gah, days like this make me really wish I could just up-sticks to Seattle....
