I officially have my first cold of 2006.

In fact, I think it carried over from the sniffles I've had for the last week. But it's definitely only a cold, thank god. None of the wierd achy feelings this time. So I should be just fine - I've gone to school/work like this a million times before.

So I've loaded myself up with vitamin c and paracetemol, and I'm totally ignoring any plans I have for 'dieting' - just for tonight. After all, don't they say you should 'feed a cold....' or something? It's more important that I not take any time off work sick than I lose a little weight.

We had a pretty good day today all in all. It's a Bank Holiday Monday, so there was no work for me or my mother. We decided to take Rowan down the beach, so he could ride his scooter along the promenade. Poor kid's too tall for it, but he insisted he wanted a 'Balamory' scooter for Christmas so that's what he got. At least my neices will be able to get some use out of it in a couple of years.

There are a lot of slopes around the beach area of Barry Island, so he wasn't totally comfortable riding around. But at least the actual Promenade itself is flat. We had lunch while we were there; Mam and I had our usual cheeseburgers and Rowan managed to eat a whole hot dog to himself despite my half-teasing him I was gonna pinch some of it. The burgers aren't all that filling, and it really looked tasty. But after that we had some donuts too.

It always makes me a little sad when we go down the beach, as it's gotten so run down over the last twenty years - though there have been some improvements. The Promenade, for instance, was renovated about ten years ago. But they've finally demolished the last of the old buildings that made up Barry's Butlins holiday camp, which was used as the location for the Doctor Who episode 'Delta And The Bannermen'. It was a crappy camp, as my recollection goes, but it was an integral part of my childhood as well as having Whovian connections that amused me. I was gutted when it closed, and I've watched them tear it down peice by peice over the years but it hurt to realise that it's now completely gone. Like it never existed in the first place and all that's there now are little 'Barratt' homes most people can't afford.

On the flipside, we were in a bookstore on Boxing Day and came across a book that's a collection of photos. Photos of roundabouts all across the country. Not the kind of book anyone we know would be interested in owning, but we were so amazed by the sheer....lunacy of the idea that we couldn't resist looking. Besides, Mam wanted to see if the 'Magic Roundabout' in Splott was included. The Magic Roundabout has massive peices of artwork, made out of road signs, and has been quite a talking point over the years but bizarrely it wasn't included in the book. What was included, was the roundabout right outside the gates to Barry Butlins! A little white circle on the road, in front of the Public Conveniences that have also been closed for at least the last fifteen to twenty years. Suffice it to say we were gobsmacked.

*sigh* Rowan just will not go to sleep tonight - which is a pain in the ass as I'm also trying to watch my Six Feet Under dvds, and I really don't want him overhearing the language they use on the show. It's bad enough I have to initially watch it with the sound down and the subtitles on, till I know he's definitely asleep. But I put him to bed nearly two hours ago, the little horror....
