So! Torchwood! (Spoiler heavy)

Alrighty then - I've seen the episode three and a half times now :-) I currently have a slight headache, but I've just nuked some rice so that should help somewhat.
I'm not going to go through a blow-by-blow account of the episode, since everyone and their uncle seems to have done that, if my f-list is any indication.
But first off, for decencies sake;
I have to confess that, even though I find Burn Gorman about as attractive as Joshua Malina (apologies to any of Joshua's fans), I did find the bit where he leaned out of the driver-side window and shot at the blowfish in the sports car strangely sexy. Even though I generally detest guns...
It was fab to get to see the whole "Hey kids, didja miss me?" in full screen - I love Ianto's 'Wait a minute - I didn't fire!' expression, followed by Jack's laugh.
Captain John appearing through a rift on the top level of the NCP on Wood Street? Pretty cool :-) Laurence's mum was apparently one of the SOCOs on the scene when Torchwood investigated the bloke who got tossed over the side, but she said it was unlikely I'd be able to spot her.
I think the bar they filmed in was Tiger Tiger - some of you may remember my frustrated squeeing at the vans being parked alongside my office for over a week - but I'm not entirely sure. The flame motif rang a bell, but that's not the front bar that I'm familiar with. Plus I don't recognise where the entrance to 'Bar Reunion' was, though it looked like somewhere around Mount Stuart Square, in the Bay.
The bar fight...amazing, but then I'd already seen it on the web so I knew it would be. The rehab conversation afterwards was great; Captain John really did seem to be absolutely besotted with Jack, and at times I wasn't sure if I should pity him or not. Obviously, he hasn't had the same time as Jack to get past whatever happened between them over those two weeks/five years they spent together. I hope Tosh was wise to him by the end of the episode though, or the whole "What? He's cute!" thing could come back to cause trouble - though typically by the end John seemed to have latched onto Gwen when not chasing Jack *yawn* Can't we get passed the whole thing about Gwen being the audience's entry point to Torchwood, what with her being so compassionate and all? She's a two-timing cow who's marrying poor, lovely Rhys out of guilt and misplaced loyalty. Oh, and because Jack went away! :-p
The shipper in me was very happy, courtesy of the way Jack looked directly at Ianto when he said "I came back for you", before catching himself and amending that to include the whole team. We know who he meant! *grin* Of course, I then wanted to smack RTD and the writer when they included that whole Jack/Gwen scene where they reveal her engagement, as it paints Jack as possibly caring more about her, thereby tainting the awesome scene between Jack and Ianto inside the British Gas office as Jack settling for sloppy seconds *scowls* I wish they'd decide either way which way Jack's feelings lie - I can take Gwen mooning over Jack, so long as he either makes it clear he reciprocates, or that he's chosen Ianto. The Jack/Ianto fanfic will still be there, either way, I just don't like having my expectations dashed in yet another fandom.
And I wince every time I see Jack land on that bench, having been pushed off the roof of the British Gas building. *hisses* Getting your back broken's a nasty way to go. I had been enjoying up till then, though, watching my office over Jack's shoulder during the conversation *grins*
One nitpick I have - aside from Owen magically knowing to swab Gwen's lips when they find her paralysed in that container - was how Gwen's phone survived intact after being hurled several metres away. It didn't look like it had one of those heavy-duty covers on it :-p
And of course we saw the return of the stopwatch! *beams* I have to get a screengrab of Ianto's grin as he holds it aloft.
The idea of messing with John's DNA to get that bomb off him was very clever, but I have a feeling that's something that's going to come back and bite them on the arse in a later episode. Just a feeling I get, knowing how crafty the Who writers can be at foreshadowing things. And speaking of...Grey? Grace? Do I take it we're going to be getting some clarification on that little estrogen rant at the start of the very first episode? *bounces happily*
Jack really needs to learn to open up to his team though, or they're gonna turn on him out of sheer frustration. Why can't he at least explain where he's been? If he's rebuilt Torchwood 3 in the Doctor's honour, then surely the whole thing about him being the organisation's number one enemy won't matter to them?
I probably have thousands of other things to comment on, but I'm running out of steam now :-p So, onto the trailer for the rest of the season; good old Richard Briers! Can't wait to see what happens with him. I already knew about Rhys getting to know about Torchwood, so seeing him come down in the invisible lift wasn't a surprise. I'm a little concerned about the kissing scenes (though Jack and Ianto! *SQUEE!!!*) especially as Tosh looked like she was trying to get someone jealous.... Martha shows up! \O/ And Gwen is jealous as hell! *evil cackle* And Alan Dale!! I remember him as Jim Robinson in Neighbours - I'm so glad he's managed to break away from the hold soap operas tend to have on actors. You stay there long enough you never get another role anywhere, it seems.
It's gonna be awesome! *bounces*
They've also activated the Jobs section of the Torchwood website now too, which is cool. I was amused to note they had to include a disclaimer that this was a fictional recruitment thing for a game and 'sorry for any disappointment' *snerk* It's fun - you act like a freelance operative and help them with their research. Took me a couple of days to figure out what I needed to do for this week's task - though admittedly, this is the first time I've had a look when it's not been late at night. I was well amused to get an email from Ianto Jones yesterday afternoon to remind me about the task though *grins*
It reminds me a little of that Stargate SG1 website where you played games and worked your way through the ranks. I miss that website!
They've also put the full episode up on the website for viewing, by the way, if anyone wants to see it and knows how to bypass the whole 'not being in the UK' thing. I'm told there are ways around that, though it's beyond me.
